1. Put Your Language Skills into Practice
Grammar and book lessons are good, and necessary up to a point. But, to retain and increase your abilities in a language it must be put into practice! This is harder than it sounds. It’s tough to find a regular supply of people who speak the language you are trying to learn well enough to provide you
In an immersion program you speak every day all day in the language you are learning and your brain is forced to work to find that vocabulary you’ve forgotten and to absorb new vocabulary. Soon you start thinking IN the language you are learning instead of thinking first in English and then translating each word in your head before you say it. This is invaluable! This is where the most important learning and retention happens.
2. Lose Your Fear
It’s tough for most people to speak out loud or to use their language skills unless they are sure they are speaking correctly. This keeps many people from every progressing much farther with their language goals. Most of this reluctance to speak and make mistakes comes from fear. Fear of sounding stupid, looking silly, etc.
When you are in an immersion program (at least the type of immersion programs we prefer), you speak to the same people day in and day out. You speak in a relaxed environment. You eat meals together, take walks together and chat about things like cultural traditions, travel, your family or home town, etc. Getting people outside a classroom environment is a huge factor that assists in decreasing fear, increasing comfort and allowing people to speak more naturally. Your fears will fade away-as your vocabulary and fluidity increase.
3. Experience a Culture and Country First-Hand
There’s nothing better than traveling to a foreign country and getting immersed in a different culture and hearing a language first-hand every day. Combining a trip to somewhere you’ve always wanted to travel with an educational opportunity gives you even less reason not to splurge and just do it! How can you argue with traveling somewhere beautiful, eating new foods and seeing new things and all while taking your language skills to a higher level. This is the kind of experience no one regrets and that creates lifelong memories.
4. Improve Your Hire-ability/Prepare for Job Interviews
In today’s increasingly global world, speaking more languages makes you more competitive as a job candidate. And, indeed in many cases speaking multiple language is now required.
Whether you’re a recent or soon-to-be college graduate or a mid-career level professional, increasing your professional value by becoming more fluent in a foreign language is a smart move.
